What is the difference between hemp-seed oil, CBD and hemp extract?
These differ greatly even though they come from same plant. Hemp-seed oil is extracted only from the seed of the cannabis plant and contains no CBD. Hemp extract comes from the flowers, stalks, and stem of the cannabis plant, the parts of the plant that contain high levels of CBD. Full-spectrum CBD and hemp extract are often used interchangeably.
What is the “entourage effect”?
The entourage effect describes the reaction that occurs when all the compounds of the cannabis plant work together in the body which results in a synergistic effect that makes them more effective than when any of the components are taken alone.
Why is full-spectrum important?
CBD is only one of over 100 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. Full-spectrum CBD oil includes all the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, but with only trace amounts of levels of THC because of the types of plants we grow. These cannabinoids work together with the CBD cannabinoid to benefit your body in ways that CBD isolate alone cannot. This is referred to as the “entourage effect,” where the groups of cannabinoids and terpenes are more effective together. Full-spectrum CBD also contains all the vitamins, minerals and omega-3s that occur in hemp plants.
What are cannabinoids?
Cannabinoids are natural chemicals found in the hemp plants that interact with different receptors in the body to produce a wide variety of benefits and effects. There are over 100 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, but the two most common cannabinoids are THC and CBD. Each cannabinoid reacts differently with different receptors in the brain and body, which is why THC and CBD offer different physical and mental effects.
What are terpenes?
Terpenes are the natural compounds responsible for the unique aromas and flavors of all plants. Some terpenes, many of them found in CBD, are believed to also have healing properties that impact the benefit of the plant on the body. For example, a common terpene in hemp plants is Myrcene, which gives the plant its earthy aroma, and its relaxation properties are known to be beneficial for inflammation, pain and insomnia. This, along with many other terpenes in cannabis, is what makes the plant so special.
How does hemp help the planet?
Hemp pulls carbon, a greenhouse gas, out of the air and puts it back into the soil where it belongs. Hemp regenerates the soil, protecting it against erosion, cleansing toxins and adding nutrients. Its long tap root allows it to access nutrients in the sub-soil that other plants cannot reach. It returns them to shallower soil, where the next crop will absorb them. Hemp also removes toxins from the ground, through a process called phytoremediation, whereby certain toxins or metals in the soil are accumulated in the biomass of the plant and taken out of the ground. It can make non-organic unhealthy soil vibrant and organic by removing toxic pesticides, sprays and fertilizers, and revitalizing the damaged soil that was harmed by traditional farming practices, such as crop tillage and synthetic fertilizers. Hemp uses little water, is a natural weed suppressant and can be used to remake and reduce the carbon footprint of many popular products we use every day. Hemp plastic, hemp biofuel, hemp textiles, hemp paper and hempcrete (hemp concrete) are only a few of the ways hemp can be used as a truly environmentally mindful option for the growth and sustainability of our world.
What does “CO2 Extracted” mean?
CO2 extraction uses pressurized carbon dioxide (the byproduct of breathing) to extract all usable parts of the hemp plant, such as waxes, terpenes and, of course, cannabinoids like CBD. Unlike other extraction techniques, like chemical extractions, this method preserves the valuable terpenes and doesn’t leave behind any chemical residue.
Does hemp really sequester carbon?
Yes! Three acres of hemp can offset the carbon footprint of an average American for an entire year. Hemp pulls carbon, a greenhouse gas, out of the sky and pulls it back into the ground where it nourishes the soil, the plants and the planet.
What is the endocannabinoid system?
The endocannabinoid system is a molecular system responsible for regulating and balancing many processes in the body, including immune response, communication between cells, appetite and metabolism, memory, and more. Studies have shown that it is through this system of receptors and metabolic enzymes that cannabinoids interact with the human body and trigger beneficial effects.
How does CBD work?
Our bodies contain two different cannabinoid receptors that help your internal system function smoothly. They help our body manage the processes that govern pain, emotions, appetite, focus, memory, the immune system and other functions. CBD works with these receptors to help the body help itself to produce a variety of potentially positive benefits. That’s why studies have shown it to be universally beneficial for such a wide variety of ailments.*
Is CBD legal?
Hemp-derived CBD or hemp extract was made federally legal under the Farm Bill of 2018 as long as the hemp contains 0.3% or less THC. However individual states may govern hemp and CBD differently. The hemp we use at First Crop is well within the federal guidelines and is federally legal. Given that some states still place restrictions on the purchase of CBD products, we recommend you conduct your own research on specific state laws and regulations before purchasing CBD products.
Is your CBD made from marijuana?
No. Although hemp and marijuana are technically the same plant known as cannabis sativa, our CBD is produced from hemp plants that contain less than .3% THC which is the psychoactive substance found in marijuana. While CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) can come from the same plant, they are very different. THC and CBD are two of 113 cannabinoids within a cannabis plant. THC is the psychotropic part of the plant that creates a psychoactive effect. CBD is non-psychoactive and has been credited with numerous health benefits.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of many non-intoxicating parts of the cannabis plant. It has been used for thousands of years in a medicinal capacity. Because of the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is again federally legal, and its potential has resurfaced. CBD offers a host of health and wellness benefits and has been used throughout history for mental wellness and support, anxiety relief, pain relief, immunity, sleep issues, neuroprotection, seizures/epilepsy and inflammation.*
Are your products third party tested?
All our products are third-party tested for efficacy, purity and content. We provide Certificates of Analysis (COAs) to show exactly what is in our products. Our products are also USDA certified organic by QAI, a third-party certifying body that regulates the process.
How is your hemp grown?
Our hemp has been certified organic by the USDA and is grown using organic and regenerative farming practices. As part of our organic standards, our crops are non-GMO, and we do not use synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. Additionally, our regenerative standards go beyond organic practices and we use sustainable farming methods. Regenerative agriculture is all about increasing organic matter in the soil to restore ecological balance, maximizing regenerative growth and aiding in higher water retention to balance seasons of heavy rains and prolonged dry periods. This further helps eliminate the need for chemical inputs and helps the soil—and the plants within it—thrive.
Where is your hemp grown?
Our hemp is currently grown on beautiful small hemp farms in Colorado and New Mexico. We are also working on plans to expand our business and cultivation of this miracle plant to other regions where it can benefit other communities.
What is a public benefit corporation?
First Crop is a public benefit corporation with “giving back” an integral part of its business model. A benefit corporation is a purpose-driven corporation dedicated to a mission of social and environmental good, with a commitment to accountability and complete transparency around how its business benefits society.
How is First Crop™ helping farmers and rural communities?
We provide hemp cultivation expertise, products and services hemp farmers need to become successful, making it possible for farmers to start or transition to hemp. Our hemp farmers are our partners. We collaborate with them and share best practices. We all learn from each other to implement growing strategies to produce products from all parts of this incredible plant. While we follow USDA organic guidelines, we welcome all regenerative farmers and help them transition toward certified-organic status. We then purchase—for a fair market price—our partners’ hemp harvests and share 5% of our profits through our innovative profit-sharing program. An additional 5% is reinvested into rural communities through charitable grants. This “feeds” communities and is regenerative capitalism at work.
Does First Crop™ use CO2 (carbon dioxide) or IPA (isopropyl alcohol) extraction?
We use CO2 extraction, because it preserves the native terpenes and cannabinoids and avoids the use of chemical solvents.
Can the color of my CBD tincture vary?
You might notice subtle color variations, but this is normal. We test each batch for efficacy and purity, so color differences do not reflect a change to the overall quality of the oil. Nature isn’t standardized and neither are her products. We do not use additives or dyes, so the natural color of the oil might show subtle differences due to seasonal variations.
Are First Crop’s™ products vegan?
First Crop’s tinctures are cruelty-free and vegan. We have not yet been able to source an organic, vegan capsule, but we are actively seeking this option and hope to make it available.
Are First Crop’s™ products organic?
All our consumer products are made with USDA-certified organic CBD extract. Learn more about our organic standards.
Does First Crop™ test for potency, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals and residual solvents?
Yes! We honor this amazing plant and work hard to ensure we’re offering the very best CBD oil and that our products stay pure, the way nature intended. Each batch is individually tested by a third-party lab to ensure the finished oil meets all legal requirements, is free from contaminants such as heavy metals and pesticides, contains the full spectrum of cannabinoids and meets the highest quality standards. First Crop honors this plant through every step of cultivation, processing and production. Our Certificates of Analysis (COAs) for our products provide evidence of this commitment.
How is First Crop™ different?
We think differently about the world and our place in it. We realize we live on a planet with finite resources and that traditional approaches to business no longer serve the vast majority.
